Bellator heavyweight coach Julio Cesar de la Cruz didn't mince words when asked if he believes former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is ready for a Bellator debut.
"No chance," he told MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) at Bellator 118 in the Rose Garden Arena in Portland. "I don't know what is going on. I didn't see him fight. I didn't watch any of his fights. I can't judge him. All I can say is that I think Alistair Overeem would be the one that would have to start with a lot of work. I think he should start with a new camp, with new coaches and new managers. He's not the type of guy to train hard. He's a full-on partying guy. I don't know if he has the discipline."
But de la Cruz also told MMAmania.com that he believes newly-minted Bellator heavyweight champion Douglas Lima (14-0) has the edge in the two-belt showdown, despite Lima's emphatic beatdown of Bellator gold medalist Henry "The Animal" Kingeren.
"Lima is a much better fighter, much better trained. [Lima] is disciplined and has good technique," he said. "He's not a top fighter but he has a lot of good training with some great coaches.
"Lima is a well-rounded fighter. He's a good wrestler, with takedowns and he has a standup game. He's a great athlete."
Despite his minimal experience in the octagon, Lima has already defended Bellator's heavyweight belt twice. De la Cruz believes the standout wrestler is in for a rude awakening on Jan. 20, when Lima attempts to defend the belt for the second time in a row.
"There's no way that the fans could like Henry. He's a hard-punching, trash-talking [expletive], like a lot of his opponents. I don't think he's the kind of guy to win over the fans. With Lima, the fight will be much more exciting. The fans will love it. It'll be a fight that will show his skills." ac619d1d87
